Reflecting where we have come from - And then moving onto the path of ‘How To Care For…’

Just recently my mother has put old family keep sakes in an auction.
Keepsakes from My Great grandfather William Henry McNamara senior, who was a respected journalist. One keepsake was an invitation from 12 Downing Street inviting him to dine with the Prime Minister and His Majesty’s Ministers on Tuesday 9th December 1913. Which he accepted and then asked the ministers to sign the menu on the day, all seventeen Ministers. The signatures included D. Lloyd George and Winston Churchill.

My Great grandfather had stuck the menu onto a red padded folder, this was another keepsake. This dinner took place just months before World War 1 broke out in 1914.
In 1914 my Grandfather William Edward McNamara (son of William Edward senior) was enlisted into World War 1 in which he gained, along with other medals, the Military Cross for bravery laying cables whilst being under heavy fire, enabling communication and messages to get through from the battle field. These were also put in the auction.

When World War 11 broke out my Grandfather was posted in India. My father William Henry McNamara junior was also enlisted into World War 11 and stationed in Egypt where he was given an engraved cigarette case that had been made by a prisoner of war; this too went into the auction. My mother has shared some of the funds from the above with my sister and me. Which I am grateful for and although I honour the ‘life’ pathways of my ‘fore fathers’ I myself am more of a Warrior of Peace and therefore felt that the innocent victims of war, War Refugees, should be given a donation from the above relics of war put into that auction. If only seems fair!

First How To Care For Info - Personal Story -

About year into dating my 'oh so' good looking and kind heart throb Richard (to be husband ) he had an accident at work. The wood he was sawing pulled his hand under the guard as it hit a knot then the saw      took three of Richards fingers off as it cut the wood.  As you can see by the picture below of Richard sitting in Heather on Exmoor it was a long time ago.
This was my first 'Care For' experience.
I can remember the first words I spoke to Richard were "Don't let this change you". I loved Richard as he was and I feared the accident would change his    personality. Strange things fears, they get you thinking the worst!
In actual fact some things changed and others did not. Working with wood was what Richard really loved doing and when the doctors said he would now have to work in an office and learn to write with his Left hand he was determined to prove them wrong. Richard had not lost his thumb and therefore found with practise he could write with his Right hand, he also was determined to work with wood, an office job definitely was not for him. Therefore he found that with practise, after his hand had healed, he could still work with wood - and the accident was not going to put him off using saws and machinery! Indeed Richard, after time, went back to his work as an apprentice Shipwright and Boat builder and completed his apprenticeship and worked in the same boat yard until it ceased trading many years later. The accident actually changed Richard's personality by making him inwardly stronger and more determined to overcome difficulty. Richard learnt to make Lemonade out of Lemons so to speak, he made a bitter experience sweeter. The inward changs was for the better.
Over the years Richard has built and repaired many boats, built many garden decks, skippered boats, worked on call for the Pilot Boat at Newhaven Harbour and created promotional woodwork and much more.
You will be able to read more about Richard's experience in his own words in my next Mini Book,         'Who built No7 That's Handy'  in the the Series of  'So That is How 'it' Happens'.
If you or someone close to you has had an accident or has had an enforced life changing experience you would have a broader outlook on life, become more Self Aware and Personally Grow  by reading
